Fall is around the corner. While it is a pleasant season, thanks to the cool weather and the beautiful hues that the green leaves turn into, it can also be quite damaging to your home. Fall involves a lot of cool air, some winds, and some rainfall. Preparing your home for Fall is also a way of preparing your home for the winter that’s coming after. Here are some tips that can help you prep your home.
Preparation Before Fall
1. Check the Gutters
Gutters are prone to a lot of debris especially with trees nearby. Fall will be bringing in more falling leaves so better clear out the gutters to keep this debris from blocking the downspout. If rain does fall, the water would have a hard time getting through the gutter to the downspout if there is too many leaves or branches blocking the way. The worst thing that could happen is that the water would find another way, which is the main cause of leaking roofs.
2. Winterize the Pool Area
When Fall starts, it wouldn’t be sensible to use the pool in such a cool weather. Start by cleaning the pool decking. If the concrete pool deck has any damage, it is best to address them immediately before rain and snow could penetrate the slab. A concrete resurfacing is a quick but efficient way to cover up all surface damage. A pool deck resurfacing coating or overlay covers damage and gives the pool deck a better-looking and more functional space ready for use when summer comes back around. After the deck has been addressed, cover the pool and shut down any pool equipment.
3. Prepare the Indoors
The climate will get pretty cool and wet, so ensure the indoors stay warm and dry. Check the windows and doors for gaps where the draft could come in. The best way to check is to hold up a candle along the seams to check for moving wind. Change the curtains to the kind made of thicker fabric.
4. Clean Out the Chimney
The fireplace will be in use more frequently now that the climate is cooler. Any dried debris stuck in the chimney could ignite a fire. To prevent such dangers, make sure that it is clean and in good working condition.
5. Have the Furnace Inspected
The heating system in the home needs to be up and running once it gets too cold for comfort. Have an expert check it immediately so that it would be ready for use when you need it most.
