Los Angeles is the second-largest city in the US and the city with the highest population in California. Its name is Spanish for “The Angels”. The city is known for its Mediterranean climate, diverse race and ethnicity, its wide metropolis, and its prominence as a major entertainment center in the United States. The city is seated on a large coastal basin with over 10,000 feet of mountains surrounding the area.
History
Los Angeles was occupied by the Chumash and Tongva way before it was discovered and claimed by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. The founding of the city became office on the 4th of September, year 1781. The city’s founding was led by Felipe de Neve, a governor from Spain. After the Mexican War of Independence in 1821, LA became a part of Mexico. It was later purchased after the Mexican-American War and became a part of the United States of America. This purchase was made as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

The Los Angeles metropolitan was among the most populous areas worldwide reaching over 18,000 in population as surveyed in 2010. Los Angeles County is also the county with the most number of people in the country. Its inhabitants are often referred to as “Angelenos”.

The City of Angels has a diverse array of industries, ranging from entertainment, media, fashion, science, technology, education, sports, medicine, healthcare, and research. It claimed the number six spot in the Global Cities Index as well as in the 9th Global Economic Power Index.

Los Angeles is one of the leaders when it comes to the motion picture or film industry. Its main entertainment location, Hollywood, has become a household name for film, TV, and music production. There are even local Angelenos who are celebrities and a lot of other celebrities have made LA their home.
